i switch it up every week in 3 week cycles. i start out with sets of 12/10/8 and the next week i go to sets of 10/8/6 and the last week i do sets of 8/6/4/2, then i start over.
but that's only on compound exercises like bench/curls/rows/etc. all other exercises are usually 12-10 reps.

All my compounds are done in the 8-6 rep range. Everything else is 8-10.
My current stats are 6'1 170. I want to get up to at least 180 before I even think of cutting. 180 by february? can be done.

nice. definitely want those washboard abs.
Whats your favorite type of cardio? I'm about to get an iPhone 4, so tracking calories will be easy. I'm thinking HIIT biking or a combo of 1 mile run + sprints everyday.

To hit 180 by February should be easy, but, you're going to negate those gains by cutting nearly immediately afterward.
You have to put on bad weight to put on good weight....but your turnaround is pretty quick. I'd be more of the mindset to try for 190-195 by this time next year and coming down to 180-185 for the next summer.
You're more likely to hold the 180 weight if you've had your body hang on to it for a while.
Don' t know if there is any point in putting on 10lbs just to 'cut'. You won't put on 10lbs of lean muscle in 2 months....and certainly not 10 lbs that's going to stick around.

Makes sense. Thanks for the input kaz. I really want abs by summer, because well, I'm a junior in highschool, lol. My arms are 13.75. Only problem is, I just don't want to look like an Abercrombie model when I cut. I'd be back in the 160's.
But honestly girls dig the Abercrombie look. But I'll just keep slow bulking for now.
I know your an ectomorph too, so let me ask you this: How did you deal with stretch marks? I have stretch marks on my front felts and my pecs. I wear them like a badge of honor, but I need them to be gone by summer.

I have resilient skin. I have a friend, a 4'11 Filipino girl. Had twins with 6'4 husband.
Not a single mark on her body.
Mine is the same. Over 30 lbs in under 3 months and not a mark...but, I also wasn't training the sht out of one body part...which is usually what happens to get stretchies.
I was growing everywhere, so it wasn't like there was one stress point.
You might have susceptible skin....who knows. There are some effective creams available to treat them afterward. You won't like having them forever. Trust me.
Oh, and build the physique your body can afford to maintain. Ectomorphs can't fight their genetics forever. Build a good lean body with decent musculature and hold it. As you age, you'll be happy you did that rather than to become a 220lb monster.
Your body doesn't want that weight and its against its nature to make it have it. Take this from an aging ecto, who can be his target weight at will, while everyone else has to torture themselves to lose 3 lbs.
Trust me, work with what you have and make it work for you. Otherwise, you will spend your life, and your workouts like a 5'1 guy who wants to be 5'10.

Switched up my diet to a version of paleo, down 15 lbs this month, and that's without stepping into the gym (had a cold for a little over three weeks)
Can't wait to see what happens when I add in bjj

Quoted because I shook my head yes the whole way through.
Same body style, took years and extreme $$ in nutrition to put on weight that would not stay a week if routine messed up. 1 week eating wrong or missing a few days in gym and 5lbs would drop, which took a month to get back eating over calorie and stopping cardio. It felt good and mentally you don't want to give it up, but it is expensive and requires alot of dedication.
Chisa, are you getting flexibility in those classes or is that like a natural thing were you're a rubberband or a stick?

New Years is here, time to turn that leaf. I've told the gf to throw away any cans of dip she finds in the house and I'm cutting out the 5 energy drinks a week I go through.
Tossing the 70lb bag and picked up a 100lb to replace it. The kickboxing will be easy to stick with because the other bag had something under the blue tape that was rock solid. I kicked it 2-3 times and it felt like a steel pipe. It moves in the bag, so its never in the same spot. Very tentative in kicks and it became a punching bag only. I don't even want to give it away because someone will break their foot on it.

Thanks for the input, Kaz.
My goal is to be 185 9-10% and just maintain that. It can be done.
I want that Patrick Bateman physique lol.
I've been doing Chest/Arms , Legs/Abs, Back/Delts, Rest, Repeat for like a month now.
I'm thinking of giving a Fullbody routine a shot, because of the high frequency(3x a week).
Here it is:
Bench Press: 3 sets of 6-8 reps
Squats: 3 sets of 6-8 reps
Incline DB Bench Press: 3 sets of 6-10 reps
Chin ups: 3 sets of 6-10 reps
Rows: 3 sets of 6-8 reps
Some sort of curl superset with some form of overhead extension: 3 sets of 6-10 reps
Some other sort of curl superset with another type of tricep extension: 3 sets of 6-10 reps
Side Raises 3x 10-12
Calf Raises: 3 sets of 10-12 reps
Deadlift(when you feel like it) 1 set of 5
Just seems long, but apparently it's supposed to be great for strength gains, and muscle gains for some one one in my situation.

Want to grow? Train the big muscles.
None of this Deadlifts "when you feel like it...."
Load that bar up and go hard. Single best gainer, IMO.
Same with squats.
Work the legs back and chest, and the smaller groups will just grow to keep up.
I have a friend who hadf bigger legs than my gf's waist. He rarely trained his arms...did shoulders, chest, back, legs. Everything else just keeps up.

Definitely get stretched during class in warmup and rolling, it's made me work on stretching at home also. In four months, I'm way more flexible than I was when I started. Core is a lot stronger too.

well, I was planning on doing deadlifts on Monday and friday, since I'm still increasing on 10lb intervals. Last time I stopped I was at 275 for 1x5. I figured 3x a week of heavy deadlifts would just drain me.
I really want to give this routine a shot. I'm gonna see where this gets me. What is you favorite rep range on the deadlift? Is it wrong to lift for sets of 10 and not go too heavy?

The heavy gets the total body core working. I like to fail by 5-8 reps of deadlifts. 10 means more weight is needed.
Started swapping deadlifts with hang cleans, then clean and press on shoulder days. Got the virgin burn back from hitting muscles in different ways. Plus the sweaty breaks out and you run outta breath. Which means its pushing limits harder.
The large group muscles lifting heavy is the testosterone boosters.

I'd warm up with 135 for 20-30 reps. Then 225 for 15-20.
I'd try to rep out my weights as best I could without wraps, but, they were a necessity when I pushed to higher weights. If you are getting 8 clean reps, good. I find that this isn't an exercise you want to be squeezing reps out of. Once you feel failure, fail. Start fresh with a new set. Too much riding on a single form-compromised rep. Too many muscle groups working to get that weight up, and any number of them can get fcked if you get greedy.
Failing at 7-9 reps, is pretty good.
I'd usually try to finish with a weight where 4 or 5 was where I ended. That would be what I set my 7-9 sights on.
405 was my ideal top-out weight, sometimes getting a bit more out of a workout, but, never hit the 500lb mark.

I have this fear of the bar snapping and shrapnel shooting in my chin lol.
Have watched prison lifting and squatting 600+ lbs and still worry 300 will break it.
