This is a 100% real conversation that I just had with a tenured professor at Harvard Medical School:
Ph.D.: "I'm looking for (my boss)"
Me: "He's in Rm. 518, this is 516"
Ph.D.: "I know, do you know where he is"
Me: "Have you tried 518"
Ph.D.: "No"
Me: "you may want to start there"
The fu**, what is with these people? I'm starting to think I need to leave this place, it's starting to piss me off more and more.

LMAO. His brain is filled with useless scientific junk and his short term memory is gone. He must not of remembered the "Hes in room 518" part. Only the "this is room 516".
lol.
However, this "Ph.D" guy could not of "STARTED" his search in room 518, like you suggested to him. Because he was already looking when he came across you. SO technically his searching must of started somewhere else. You should of said "go try there next".
And you assumed this guy was dumber than a brick, because you had to tell him you were in room 516? I would of assumed he knew what room he was looking in before he started to actually look in it and discovered you.
Anywho
lol.

Start fcking with them.
Pretend you know where he is. Sell it to them. Let them facepalm themselves in private, vowing to never ask you again.
We have a code in teaching.
If we have a kid who is a chronic PITA, we send them to another room to go get a "longstand". The other teacher knows the code, and sends them to another teacher, who then sends them along, around, around, around.
It's a bit of work on our end, but the payoff is Heyoooge.

You thought it was 'cause they trusted you with the coveted 'longstand".

I'm a scientist, kinda...and I take offence at that. It's true though, sometimes you get caught up in your own thing that you don't really pay much attention to other things. It also doesn't help that, correct me if I'm wrong, most scientific institutions are like microcosms of society. By that I mean everything is done internally and there is less 'outside' interaction than in other professions.
Here at my Uni the Science and Technology department has it's own separate building with a cafe and such facilities. Why would there be a need to venture to other parts of the campus when all you need is at your fingertips and you are surrounded by 'like minded' people. In the 2 years I've been at uni I have only been in about 10% of the rooms outside the Science department, how introverted is that!?
It's not that I'm unsociable, just all my friends/colleagues are either in that department or are the other side of the city. I have no reason to be in the other buildings, especially ones where keycard access may or may not be required
Pro Tip; If you're somewhere you're not sure you should be, just walk with purpose and act as if you know where you're going. I get out of so many awkward situations like that.
