just went on sportsenter and said that homosexuals need to keep quiet about their sexuality because kids look up to them as athletes.

Honestly - I could care less about a homosexual coming out.
Chisa, every person has the right to say whatever they want. Im glad someone finally said something negative towards the situation (as bad as that sounds).
I understand the LGBT is a minority community. However I dont get the big deal. Why does it matter if everyone knows your gay or not? You do not see pro athletes declaring they are straight do you?
If we want everything to be equal (among sexual preferences) then why make a big deal out of it?

because up until this point, there is a segment of the population that was bullied to lie about who they are
Asanti's words are bullshit, homosexuality exists and children cannot be hidden from it
His words imply that being homosexual is a bad thing, which it isn't.
I don't give a shit about someone's sexuality, as it does not affect my life whatsoever, but I do care about people trying to enforce archaic morals from a broken system (religion)
Every person has the right to say what they want, as they have the right to come off like an idiot (in Asanti's case), and they also should expect to be responded to, words have repercussions

I can agree with your point. I guess im just fed up with seeing all the praise this guy (Jason Colins) is getting for coming out as gay to the public.
I would say, (IMO), 98% of Pro athletes lives are hidden from the public. That goes for who they are hooking up with, there bank roll, where they hangout, etc. They are celebs. They want to keep things private for the most part. I just dont get all the hype around 1 guy saying he is gay. Its over televised. I guess thats all sports news have to talk about, but it has gotten so out of hand. Its all over all networks. This guy got calls from the president and Oprah. For simply saying he is gay? Thats stupid.
Like you said - I dont care, A lot of others dont care.
Only those involved in Jason Collins world should have an opinion that matters.. because they are the ones that are in direct contact. Why he deemed it necessary to come out to the entire world in Sports Illustrated, just makes it look like a cry for fame.
Stupid. Its up to parents to teach their children about Sexuality. 1 guy saying he is gay in the NBA should not change that.

It's a big thing, because pro sports have been largely absent from homosexuality under the threat of mocking and isolation. In a field where "manliness" is everything, homosexuality brings with it a certain designation as "less of a man" due to a number of cultural factors (socio economic factors and thus the influence of religion). It's a big thing because it's the first time someone has faced down that pressure and has stepped forward. It takes some serious guts, knowing he'll have to face the truth of his announcement via the behavior in the locker room. Good luck with that. Little minds have trouble with things past their understanding, he's going to face some backlash for sure.
It's not going to be a thing after the first few athletes come out.
Instead of getting tired of it, you can try not watching Sportscenter for 6 hours.

I agree with that guy and Mitrion. Keep it to yourself, most of us don't give a shit.
tell ya teammates in the locker room, so when you look at them in shower they can punch you.

You do not know this for sure. You are not in locker rooms. I can not guarantee, but I bet there are more gay NBA players who have told teammates about it... even before Jason Collins came out. Its about the public announcement of it. No one outside of the NBA or those lives affected by the person, should even care to know. It really should not even matter inside the NBA collection of players neither.

I grew up playing multiple sports and was in multiple locker rooms, the atmosphere certainly has not changed. There is a reason it's taken so long for him to come out as the first, and it's due to exactly what I said.

The negative stigma attached to homosexuals in professional sports is what makes it a big deal.
That takes some guts.

You know I am not homophobic lol. Or against gay rights or anything like that.
All I just want to say is "WHO CARES IF HE IS GAY"?
And Professional Sports Players are much different than your high school locker rooms. These are grown ass men and women. These are people that are with eachother a shit ton, getting paid to do what they do. It is a JOB. No one should even CARE about the sexual orientation from the player next to them.

I agree with you on that part, I don't give a shit what people do with their dicks/vajayjays
but Professionals aren't different, you just responded to a thread about a sports star spouting some bigoted bullshit

As some of you know, I am a Christian (although my random bouts of slanderous language, copious amounts of alcoholi consumption, and many sexual partners may dictate otherwise), this is appalling to me. Yes you're entitled to believe what you want and do what you want. However, whenever something is mentioned about Christianity on the news, it's pushed under the rugs. Prayer is being taken out of school and many other places. Yet when someone comes out, they're treated like a hero. I have nothing against homosexuals. I have a few friends who swing the other way (one of whom is a bombass lezzy). Do I agree with it? No. But I'm not going to let that affect how I see them as a person. Just my two cents.

Smoke completely mis represented what Asanti Samuel has said.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Watch that for the interview. He simply said to keep Sports separate from Sexual preference. It should make no difference if someone knows you are gay or not.

I think our society desperately needs to let go of it's culture of celebrity worship. None of us should care what (x) famous person is doing, sexually or otherwise. It's an unhealthy obsession that is borderline pathological.
On the other hand, please don't even try and claim that Christianity is being oppressed, that's some propaganda. Prayer belongs in the mind, it's a personal connection between someone and their god. It doesn't need to be mandated in public schools or elsewhere. If you believe, it's for yourself, it's not the job of government or the media to supply your foundation for you.

When schools have been told to stop saying the Pledge of Allegiance, I think it's safe to say something is up. "One Nation Under God" was what this country was founded on.

it was written in 1892, originally did not include the phrase "under god", that was added in the 1950's
it's been around for 121 years, really not that big of a deal, and the country was not founded on it
"god" was only added to our money in the 1950's also...the whole Communist propaganda bullshit had us doing some crazy shit back then

of course, because it's a fundamental principle of science
if someone wants their child to have a religious education, send them to the school that's appropriate for their belief structure
pagan schools would be f**king sick

The Bible isn't a theory, it's an unsupported collection of anecdotes passed down between people who happen to like what it says. It's account of the Earth and it's age have been disproved many times over. The Bible has no place in an area that is interested in investigating natural phenomena. It is simply a guidebook a segment of the world's population has embraced as their moral guide.
Scientific Theories have to pass scrutiny of other scientists, and the ability to be supported by repeated experiments. If something can't be repeated or proven, it is discarded. There is no hearsay in science, it's either put up or shut up. That is the nature of science, and why a religious view (i.e. absent of proof) has no place in a classroom dealing with a subject matter that involves logic, reason, and observable proof.
Now, this doesn't mean that there isn't a "god" or something that created/controls the universe. That's not what Evolution is saying anyway, it has nothing to do with the creation of the planet, rather, the rise of human beings and the further evolution of all living things from a common ancestor by a mechanism.
Having the Bible compete with a scientific theory is just silly. Once upon a time, we thought the Earth was flat.
That doesn't make belief irrelevant, rather, it has it's own place in the world.

must be unique to america because it isn't even a question.. 'should evolution be taught?'. we're taught science.. and then we have religious education.. where we are just taught to appreciate religion but not really take it seriously :p
anyway.. the case of homosexual sports stars 'coming out' is something which causes a stir this side of the pond too. especially with rugby stars. i think it's great that they do come out.. but i am also somewhat inclined to with syn and think.. well 'who cares if they're gay?'. but unfortunately, we live in a world where not everybody is as liberal minded as we are. and a lot of people do care.
so if sports stars can somewhat help to change this.. that is great. there are a lot of actors who get behind it, and sports stars can give it a much wider reach.
