I'm willing to take my time to develop the land if need be....I'd love to make it self sufficient (geothermal heating, solar panels etc)hiph0pan0tamus wrote:im pretty sure Chisa needs running water and electricity.

even I can manage a desert garden, because nature has already shown that in that environment, those plants cannot be killed

Kind of misleading, considering most probably didn't read the article.
The "1 foot sliver of beach" was actually 1800 sq feet of total area. That's only $66 bucks per square foot.
I paid $160/sq ft for my granite countertop....so, 1800 sq ft of Montauk beachfront....totally different story. Average home price there is close to $2 million.
Personally, if I had the means (which these guys clearly do) I'd have paid more than that simply because I'd make it back and then some when I sold the property.
Now, if it was a 1 ft wide sliver that stretched between 2 existing properties, which is what the headlines make it sound like, then the buyer would be a fcking retard.

But it is just a one foot slice of beach, just that it runs from Montauk Highway to the water
So all that square footage is completely useless, what are you going to do with a foot wide sliver that goes on for a half mile?
Ridiculous purchase all based on one guy who didn't want another guy walking on his property to get to the ocean
Pure douchebaggery, that's NY for you

Thats nothing compared the ridiculous land prices of London and Monaco.
The same amount of land in London will cost you £1200 per sq foot. Monaco is double that
Be thankful you have lots of space! Those rich NY dudes paid $66 per sq foot (in a high end area). Average UK price is $90 per sq foot
I'll own many things in my life. Land will not be one of them

Land is only worth what people are willing to pay for it. It began as a $10 offering, but, clearly the value exceeded that many times over.
We're looking at buying or building a new house right now.
One new development is selling standard residential lots (just to dirt and the city services) for $450k and up. No house included. In another area, pretty much in the same radius from downtown as the other one, lots start at around $300k. Same dirt, same proximity, same everything....
Head an hour east and you can buy several acres of serviced land for that much.
So what if he wanted to prevent others from walking on his property when heading to the beach. Sheit, I replaced my 5' fence with a 6' one, and built a 7' wooden privacy wall just so neighbors can't look into my yard.

with the atheistic rituals and sacrifices probably going on in your back yard, people not seeing in is probably a good idea
and that's a ridiculous amount of money for land, considering your latitude on Earth

It's weird, back in 2005 when I bought my current house, I was looking at building on a lot.
A ridge lot overlooking the river, with a panoramic view of the mountains was going for ~$300k. That seemed like a lot, but, it was justified based on what your back windows would look out onto.
These $450k lots are....suburbia. No mountains, no rivers, just, sardine can-residential. Mind you, most homes going in on them are 3000 sq ft+, but, same with those ridge lots in 2005.
It's mostly our city and the boom cycle we're in again. Go same latitude, to the north and east of you, and $450k gets you a beautiful acreage overlooking the Atlantic.

sounds like you guys have a nice real estate bubble happening, just a bad time to get in (as opposed to 5-10 years ago)
I have to go to Maine to get cheap property in New England. Everything else in Mass, Vt, and so on, is priced out of what I would consider spending for a second home. Upstate NY is possible, but I loathe NY and will never live there again (if I can help it)
I really am considering either land, or a small home in either the Nevada/Utah desert, or in rural Oregon/Washington

I'm at a weird crossroads right now....must be middle age crisis time, or something.
The leaves are changing color, and summer is coming to an end. I'm looking at the calendar, looking at my age. If I die at an average age, I've lived half of the summers of my lifetime. Half down, half to go.
I need to be somewhere that has more to offer, more of the year.
Oregon would be ideal because it's a pretty static climate.
Utah/Nevada would be the opposite of here. For too many months things would be too hot to function, and you'd be looking forward to the winter months when life can resume.
I'm not sure what's standing in our way....family, income, job opportunities, friends, health care, comfort....but I could pack up and move to the condo in a heartbeat. Go with a bank full of money, live without a mortgage, and just find a job you enjoy doing....but primarily, live life.
Unfortunately, my wife and I have a problem with responsibility, making responsible choices, and thinking 13 steps ahead of everything. Probably idealized the lifestyle that I'd live in Maui, or even in Vancouver. Every place eventually becomes home and with that, it's own set of problems.
