so i live in a duplex that my family owns. my neighbors moved into the other unit a few weeks ago and they had comcast come set up their internet/cable. the tech that came out was too lazy to run a separate line for their unit, so he put on like 3 splitters and put my line at the very bottom of the signal priority. so my internet has been fucked up for a few weeks and ive had intermittent connection and sometimes its down for hours.
ive had to call comcast every day to have a signal sent to reset my modem because it locks up due to the intermittent connection. i finally made an appointment when i had enough of this crap and the dude came out today and explained the whole thing to me. then he did some shit to fix it and not only did i get my internet back, it nearly DOUBLED my speed. its not like im getting anything for free though, it bumped my speed to 54Dn/11Up which is what im paying for.

Every splitter takes a dB hit, -3.5 is the lowest, they go from -5, - 7, - 9, - 11. You want to keep your signal level in a positive range.
So if your signal started at +10 and he ran through 3 splitters (3.5 by 3), your signal is in negative range and your picture/data quality sucks. That's only if they were 2 way splitters, if they were 3 way, you're looking at -15 dB drain. Pretty much like an antenna and fuzzy channels.
Some fools think a booster is always the fix. But all they do is boost a shitty signal, so it amplifies the noise on the line and makes it worse. Boosting a clean line can work.
