Want to get this rolling again, but fishing absolutely sucks this year. So I'll start it with this, instead of a shitty report.

Do the handful of anglers here do any fishing this time of year? What do you target?
I usually spend these cold months cleaning/maintaining gear, and have now added rodbuilding to the mix. Well, gearing up for it anyhow...
On a kayakfishing forum I frequent, someone posted a report from Florida, describing a day full of catching fish (three species even) in T-shirt weather. Kinda jealous of Natas right now lol.

Finished building my first custom rod a couple weeks ago, finally got around to getting some pictures of it. Definitely looks like a first build in spots, but overall it came out alright. To be used throwing swimbaits for halibut and striper. Casts better than anything I've bought off the shelf.

Next up is a live bait/rockfish stick.

I should forget my cooler at the house more often. Caught these yesterday. Packed them in my waders (iced and everything lol) for the drive home.

Threw the battery on the charger yesterday... hooked it up last night and boat fired up on 1 crank. Gonna do an oil change this weekend then take it down to the bay for some Stripers some time soon.

I had one of the best fishing years in a good while thanks to tide tables. You should check them for your area.
Winter almost makes it too easy to catch reds and flounder. I don't really target flounder during the run. Its too damn packed to fish at the good spots. I do have a honey hole that produces fish most of the time and is hardly crowded.
I bought a kayak last year but havent used it much. I plan on using it alot this year. Only think is live bait is sort of a hassle. Using more and more artificials when kayaking, catching makes it that much sweeter.

@ hiph0p- Downright jealous of your striper fishery. Go get em!
@Alpha- Almost all the fishing I do is from a kayak. Took out a friends loaner yak in '06 and never looked back.
@Mick- Fishing in SF bay/delta is so tide dependent, I'd be screwed if I didn't check the tables.
I prefer using artificials, too. Not having to catch bait first allows for an extra hour or two of sleep! Went with live this time because recent weather has mucked up the water clarity, and felt live bait would be more of a sure thing.

hmmmm, scientist say that the only known sharks to breach the water when attacking prey are those Great Whites off the coast of South Africa...
That had to be the ultimate rush of adrenaline!

They breach out here, too. I personally know two guys who have been hit, and a couple more who have had drive-bys.

Got another Hali yesterday. DFG survey lady back at the boat ramp said it was the first one she's seen pulled out in three weeks. Weird, that's the last time I was there lol.

Trade off some fishing trips. Would be fun as hell to get out the swamps and snag some different fights.
We went out to the Lake couple weeks ago. Lightning storm set in and pushed us in the swamp, couldn't ride out against the white caps on lake. Just put poncho's on, put pole back in water and sat in the downpour. Was terrible weather all day, only caught 37 catfish and 1st clear sky, we hauled ass to the launch.

How many rods do you have in the water usually? That many fish, all you're free time must be spent rebaiting. Not a bad problem to have.

1 per person. Thats a terrible day, a decent day would be 60, a great day is 100+ .
2 cast without a bite and its time to move.

Crazy ^. I'm happy catching 1-2 fish at my spot, where most people end up with nothing.
Rockfish season just started, so I may switch it up. It's just hard to pass up the 10 minute drive to the Hali spot for a 3 hour drive to the nearest less sharky stretch of coastline.

More driving = bigger fish. Leave home at 5:30 and we're putting fish in boat by 6:30

Went back to the lake this morning. Woke up at 3:30 to be there before daylight. Laid in bed at 10 and my body said WTF are you doing and stayed up til 12:30. Caught nothing but sunburn today. Lake was too rough to fish, tried every corner of it. Boat rocking and cork bobbing up and down makes it tough to judge a bite.Left with maybe 35 catfish. Saw 6 gators today. 1 monster (9ft plus) was within 25 ft of the boat and we thought it was a log until it swirled.
Swamp scene. Cypress we fish in.

And the bald eagles nest that stays and screams at you the whole time you're under it. Farthest tree on right, top of it is the nest.
