You need adapter cable to record PS3 because of the HDCP compliance thing whether you have the new or old El Gato. I think it comes with it though so you should be solid. The original El Gato will record in 1080p I think... just not 60FPS. And youtube only just started doing 60FPS videos. If you are investing towards PS4 then yeah.. go with the more expensive one because in a few years it will still hold its value ( I think).

"does the HD60 work on ps3?
A: No, the HD60 lacks the AV plug required to interface with the PS3. You will need to purchase the original Elgato, which records at 30fps, to record PS3 footage. (The Playstation 3 uses HDMI encryption, which blocks recordings via HDMI).

Honestly.. Id just get the Original El Gato. It will work with both PS3 and PS4 and quality comparison sake - wont be that noticeable.
Here is a comparison grabbed directly from elgato.com

So the only thing the old one Does NOT do is capture 1080p at 60FPS. However if you look further down you can see it still does 1080p at 30FPS.
If you were only going to be capturing PS4 id say go with the new. However if you are going to use it mostly on PS3 then get the old.. and upgrade to the new down the line.
