[qoute]In the family photo, Aidan Pankey is pictured with his pet rat, which his family says was purchased from Petco and caused his death. It is an image from happier times.
Aidan, age 10, died June 12, 2013, hours after he was rushed to the hospital with severe stomach pains. The official cause of death was listed as streptobacillus moniliformis infection, commonly known as rat-bite fever, after exposure to an infected rat.
Now Aidan’s San Diego family is suing Petco over the bacterial infection they say he contracted from his pet rat purchased at the national pet store chain. All this, according to the Associated Press.
Said Petco in a statement:
"We are deeply saddened by the Pankey family's tragic loss. The health and safety of people and pets is always a top priority, and we take the family's concerns very seriously."
Background according to AP and CBS: Attorney John Gomez told The Associated Press on Tuesday that his firm filed the lawsuit Monday in San Diego County seeking an unspecified amount for the suffering endured by the Pankey family, whose son, Aidan, died June 12, 2013, hours after he was rushed to the hospital with severe stomach pains.
The boy's grandmother purchased the male rat, which Aidan named Alex, because her only grandson wanted a mate for his female pet rat, Gomez said. The boy took the rat home May 27, 2013, and woke up the night of June 11 in severe pain with a fever and stomach problems. He was pale, lethargic and could barely walk, according to the lawsuit. He died at 1:09 a.m. the next day.[/quote]
I like how the news and the people involved talk nothing about the symptoms that scientific fact state have to have been present not just this, "severe pain with a fever and stomach problems. He was pale, lethargic and could barely walk". Yes taking into account the incubation period there are other symptoms aside form what they stated and they happen after the incubation period. It is not like the kid went to bed that night and woke up dead, it is not effing Marburg ffs and even that does not happen over night.
My hypothesis is that the kid was left/not paid attention to (product of today's society, where parents are either too involved or not involved enough) until it was too late and now they are angry and want something done.
I can see it now, BAN ALL PET RATS!!!!!!!!!!! THE SKY IS FALLING!!!!!!OMG IT IS SOMEONE ELSE'S FAULT FOR NOT ENSURING MY CHILD IS SUPERVISED AND TAKEN CARE OF AND HANDLING PETS SAFELY!!!!!!!!!!!
On a side note I would like to take this opportunity to say three things.
- Spoiler:
Few things to keep in mind.- 1. The bacteria S. moniliformis (Streptobacillus moniliformis) is common in rats and rodents of the domestic type.
- 2. There is no serologic test available to pet stores/suppliers for S. moniliformis. (meaning there is no test to use on rats to see if they have it)
- 3. If S. moniliformis infections in animals is suspected it can be diagnosed by isolation of the organism, serology or molecular techniques.
- 4. Almost all rats infected are asymptomatic. (meaning show no signs of illness)
- 5. The symptoms of the disease in humans is much more pronounced than "he was flu'ey/doctor visit/death"
- 5. The bacteria S. moniliformis is a common flora of the rats respiratory system. (or they all have it to some degree)
- 6. The bacteria can manifest itself into disease just by simply a rats teeth getting too long and not cut.

Thought the rats at the pet stores were snake food.
They are nasty as hell, not sure why someone would have one for a pet.

Not as boring as hamster, not hard to care of like cats and dogs and they are easy to replace. Though they are still shitty pets.
The kid died within two weeks. Someone/something here is very wrong here. Kids should not die from rats. What is this, 1600? Parents should have done some research about common diseases in rats before keeping it as a pet. Especially something that is not a fish, a cat or a dog.
Poor kid and I bet grandma feels awful

My rat I had growing up was easily one of the best pets I've had. Even the cats tolerated her. Pet turtle was without a doubt, the most boring.
