Should Teachers Be Tested For Drug Use?

Saw this thread on another site and thought it might make for some interesting conversation maybe.
I just recently found out that most teachers are not drug tested. I truly cannot believe this. The people that are in charge of our children are not mandated to be drug tested, I'd go insane if I found out that the people responsible for my child's welfare were on drugs, no matter the kind. The teachers union in general is a complete cluster ****, in my area they're constantly going on strike. Right now they're threatening to strike over the $500/year they have to spend on health benefits, they don't think they should have to pay any.
Thoughts?

Are parents drug tested? How many pill popping women are mothers, how many alcoholics are fathers? Bus drivers, sure, but teachers...f**k off and mind your business

Probably one of the funniest things I've read in a while.
Clearly, this is just another person who has an axe to grind against teachers....they go from drug testing the teachers unions to striking to health care contributions....
For over a decade, I have dealt with countless idiots who seem to think that teachers "strike all the time", and are "always on vacation", and who have "ridiculously overpowered unions", and so on and so on.
Now, it's that teachers should be drug tested.
You know who needs drug testing?
Parents and students.
I know of more parents of students who have drug problems than I have ever known people who casually do drugs.
I have taught more kids who, as young as 11, have done more 'hard' drugs (ecstasy, coke, etc) than I do adults who have ever done them.....I I've known a fair amount of druggies, so, this says a lot.
You see, my issue with this sort of statement, is that it comes from the same variety of idiot who thinks that "we're always on vacation", not knowing that for the 200 days of work, we're only paid for those 200 days. We get all that "vacation" time, without the salary. The rest of society is more than welcome to our unpaid vacations....and more than welcome to do what I do when I need ot take time off outside those unpaid times...and that's to not only take a loss of pay, but to ALSO pay the cost of the substitute teacher who covers for me.
There are all kinds of idiot when it comes to being the critic...none of which ever want to be the topic of conversation themselves.
If someone thinks they can start testing my competency as a teacher, then by all means, open up the gates for me to do the same for you as a parent. I've raised over 10 000 kids from the ages of 10-18. Most of these critics and know-it-alls have done it, at most, 3 or 4 times.
So yeah, bring on the drug testing....it's a complete waste of money because teachers are a such an uninteresting and pathetic bunch that the most you'll find is elevated quantities of brownies, donuts, and caffeine. But once my drug test is done, let's see what's going on at home. I'd be interested in seeing just what the fck happens to make such a young person so incredibly fcked up so soon in life.

Teachers dont get paid during the summer months? Or is that an option to stretch out your regular pay to cover the summer months as well? I think I was always under the wrong assumption.

They take 200 days of work and divide the salary so that we can get paid during the breaks....which means we take home less money throughout the working months than we actually earn in those months in order to get through the ones where we're not at work....
But, the biggest misconception is that when the kids are off, so are we, when the kids have to be at school, so do we, or when the kids go home, so do we. I never take a lunch break, and never have a day shorter than 10 hours. Most work weeks are 7 days and....the average teacher pays ~$1600 / year out-of-pocket for supplies and materials that are necessary, but the boards are too underfunded to cover...
And the underfunding comes from attitudes like the one Walk posted....

Just to clarify those are not my words.
I post threads I think might be interesting and I seldom contribute to them after the original post.

That's what happens when education is dead last on the priority list.

To start conversations. To bring some life into the forums that I visit. To see how discussions unfold. To interact with you all on some level because I do not play on PS3. To stay active and be a part of your group. Maybe it is for my own selfish reasons to try to take myself back in time, to try and recapture some of what I remember we all used to have.
You wish it to be anything else?
I might need you all more than you need me but that does not mean I am above not needing anyone.

One teacher I remember the most, I'm pretty sure she was on speed everyday. Did not shut up, always jumping around and getting excited telling stories. When it was your turn to talk she would look at you wide eyed and giant smile shaking head yes the entire time waiting for her moment to explode in verbal spew again.
Hated that class, too much work.

Sounds like she was very animated and truly enjoyed what she did. Maybe she just wanted you all to catch her enthusiasm.
Find her and show her how you have grown into a nice young man then report back to us.
