Looking for a new desktop..

For a month or so i've been on the lookout for a new PC, as my current one is over 3 years old now, and while still working, is incredibly slow. Even browsing the internet makes the fan go into overdrive.
I won't be using it for gaming but I do watch a lot of sport and videos online, and I like to be able to multitask without it slowing down at all.
I found this and thought it seemed pretty good. But I know some of you here are a bit more in the know when it comes to computers.

I was thinking of just upgrading it to a 1TB harddrive and the Corsair 1600 mhz ram as it only costs about 20 pound extra for both.
Anyone think this seems like a good deal?

Nice specs, except the Windows 8 platform.

i was thinking that, but i can change it to have windows 7 home premium and it's the same price. i've been looking into windows 8 and trying to decide whether i'd want it or not.
i've not used it personally.. but the one thing i thought was it seemed really quick. but i wasn't keen on the layout of it. so i might just stick with windows 7.

I love Windows 8. I put it on my laptop when I upgraded it to a SSD. The SSD + Windows 8 made it so fast. It's incredible. But I see nothing wrong with Windows 8 other than a learning curve. It has so many more great features than Windows 7 once you find your way around. The apps are beautiful and useful.

Why not build one? And windows 8 seems as though it should only be released for tablets as it feels geared toward them.

i like the fact it is customisable and is more like a mobile phone.. and also if you don't like the tile lay out you can just change it to normal desktop mode anyway.
but from what you say about it. i think i might just have it then.

Any thoughts on building your own?

oops sorry yours must have come through as i was typing my own and i hadn't looked sorry.
i had thought of building my own.. but it would be more expensive. that processor alone is about 190 pound.

Well if you were up to it I could find the parts on the site of your choice and then send you the specs. I know you said that you did not need to play video games with it but I think I could create one for you that you could build that would be able to play games and do all the stuff you want for cheaper. Is that BPS?

Well the apps are tablet like, but they are so beautiful on desktop! And they are useful, the finance app is great if you like checking stock markets and commodities prices. And the articles on both the finance and news app update multiple times daily and are from good sources.

it does sound like a good idea.. but as I have never done it before, I'd be a bit apprehensive. But I am into technology and enjoy 'fixing' things. I think i'd rather start on something smaller.. so if you have any tips or can guide me to where I can find good components at good prices. I'd definitely look into it.

I think that's what struck me most, was how it was more like a phone/tablet. And I like that idea. I figure windows are trying to compete with tablets. But from what I'd seen, I like how customisable it is.. and how things like news/weather can be instantly viewed. I was also impressed with how quickly it seemed to load. Almost instanenous. I think some people might see it as pointless and overcomplicated.
But I think that once you get to grips with it, it would actually be simpler and a lot more accessible.

If I can build a computer you surely can.
Post some links of sites where you can get stuff from and I will create a list of stuff. There are a couple of other computer peeps on this site that could even offer feedback or their own ideas as well.

pfft maybe you underestimate yourself. i think maybe i could do it.. but i don't know. i will look after the weekend as i have a busy work schedule. the more i think about it, the more tempting it is. might be a very good idea. already i found the processor at a reduced price of 140 pound.. hmmm. so you're right, i am sure i could build it cheaper.

Are you stuck on Intel?

If you want cheap, go AMD. If you want good, go Intel. Intel has much better engineering teams and way better technology (and thus performance and WAY less power consumption), but AMD is cheaper. A lot cheaper. Intel basically has a monopoly now so they have pretty high prices. I'm good with components, so if you have questions I can usually help.

nah i don't want amd, i definitely want intel. had amd a couple of times and have never been particularly impressed.
i know the bulldozer is meant to be pretty good but i want an ivy bridge i5. i think it's worth spending the extra.
and thanks vette, if i have something i want to know, i'll definitely ask you.

Your best bet is Vette and Funky then, it has been a really long time since I built an Intel rig.

Well if you were going AMD, I would only recommend their Fusion APU's anyways, I wouldn't recommend a Bulldozer (now Piledriver, which is enhanced Bulldozer).
