the house was going to be demolished in a few days and we always take the chance to use those houses for training. we were practicing breaching walls and then crawling through the wall studs (easier said than done because they are only 16 inches apart. then we practiced forcible entry (breaking down doors) and on the roof we were practicing vertical ventilation (cutting a hole in the roof to let smoke and heat out of the house.)Chisa wrote:care to give some background on this, cause otherwise

only a firefighter would need a refresher on using a chainsaw and making a hole

really?hiph0pan0tamus wrote:only a firefighter would need a refresher on using a chainsaw and making a hole
there is much more to it than that. placement of the hole is crucial. has to be over the main body of fire and has to be on the correct side of the roof or else the wind will feed the fire. then you have to cut the hole without falling into it or causing the roof to collapse. have you ever tried cutting a hole with a saw while completely blinded by smoke? then you have to remove the piece you cut out which is the reason for the many vertical cuts. why wear yourself out trying to pull up a 5x5 piece of decking that's nailed across 4 rafters when you can just beat the decking into louvers?
we practice so we get faster at it so we can get off the roof as quickly as possible.
