Not sure if anyone here has ever kayaked before, but I'm looking to get into this. I've been whitewater rafting several times and the river in my hometown would be awesome just to paddle. It's not rapids or anything, but rather than sit inside on the weekends I'd rather do something constructive and physical. Any suggestions if anyone has any constructive feedback?

Whenever I go kneeboarding I stay under strapped to the board as long as I can, just to freak people out.

The most important thing you can do is paddle as many kayaks as you can before buying one. One that is comfortable for somebody else may not be a good fit for you. Usually retailers will let you test paddle all you want. You're gonna want to decide if you want a sit-inside or sit-on-top kayak. I'm not as familiar with the sit-inside kind, as I mainly use mine for fishing, and sit-on-tops have a better deck layout for that. A sit-on-top is also easier to get back on if you tip.
You'll also figure out what size kayak works best for you by test paddling. Usually a smaller kayak will be better in a river than a longer one will. Smaller kayaks are more maneuverable, while longer kayaks maintain speed and track better.
It may sound silly, but get a PFD and wear it. It might save your ass one day. If you end up with a sit-inside, get a bilge pump, too.
Its worth the money to take a paddling safety course. You'll learn how to self rescue (get back in your kayak) and proper paddling and bracing techniques. Improper paddling will tire you out faster and bad bracing can result in a dislocated shoulder.
Some retailers will sell off their rentals once or twice a year. Finding out when these sales are can save you some dough. Craigslist is a good resource as well.
Don't skimp on the paddle. A quality, light paddle makes all the difference.

I'm leaning towards a sit in because I want to ride rapids and do casual paddling at home on our almost no flowing river.

I've just bought a 2 man inflatable kayak.
I want to get into it so thought I'd start cheap and see how it goes. Going to do a 3 day tour up a river camping along the way.

Oh yeah, I forgot about inflatables! An awesome way to get out, paddle around, and decide where to go from there.
Be careful who you paddle the tandems with. I've also heard them called "divorce boats" lol.
