Will discs disappear in the next decade?

I know steam has had great success on PC and ive noticed more and more titles coming onto PSN/Xbox live pretty much on release day but with ridiculous prices on them. Id always much rather have a physical copy than download some file onto my console. I think its plain to see that everything is going 'digital' these days (music/netflix/books etc) so i take it games will be no different.
So with next gen console talk starting to gain a bit momentum do you think discs are on their way out? And are you bothered?

#34319personally, i'm not bothered, yet i am bothered.
I'm not bothered because it is the wave of the future, and it's going to happen eventually. As long as once you've purchased the download, lets say your console fails, you are able to re-download it for free onto your new console. Games will also run faster this way, as they are not reading off of a disc to the system, rather than just reading directly from the hard drive.
I am however bothered because of this... where i live, i cannot get fast internet. So to me, i'm done gaming, unless i want to leave my system on for 2 weeks so it can download a damn game. There are many people in the world that are in the same situation i am, or simply cannot afford fast internet.
What happens to the people that dont even have internet? They play games too. Now your forcing internet into the laps of some folks that may not afford it or simply just dont want it.
It's a touchy subject, but i'm sure there are engineers out there scratching their heads or just saying "**** it"

I think discs will be around until towards the end of this decade. I think the only real reason for keeping them right now is because of limited hard drive space and internet speeds generally not being quite at the point to make it feasible.
Saying that, I think Sony buying Gaikai is a pointer for where we are headed. The suggestions seem to be that PS4 will use Gaikai to stream demos, so you don't have to download anything- just stream it from a central location. I think eventually, when internet speeds are good enough, that full games cold be streamed this way with no noticeable latency.
Once we can stream like that, possibly by 2020, there's no reason to keep discs at all

You missed out on tapes Z. Rewinding using only a pencil was a great way to spend a lesson at school. And saving battery power too

used to love listening to the radio when i was a kid and pressing record whenever a good song came on.
Did it every other sunday when the top 40 was on. Pepsi chart ftw!

I remember doing that too.
You guys remember the song "Fly" by Sugar Ray? I remember listening to the radio all day so I could record that song.
The only other song I remember recording on cassette was Eminems "The real slim shady".
Ahh those were the days.

Just think there will be a generation of kids that won't have ever known that fresh smell of a newly opened disk box.

Or trying to press the center button on a cheap ass case hoping the disk doesn't snap before the release lets it go.

plastic wrapper is fine, its that damn tape shit they put on the case that drives me insane. I usually just end up tearing into the case and throwing it away anyways lol
