Sony Computer Entertainment has filed a patent for technology designed to combat pre-owned game sales. The patent (via NeoGAF) describes NFC-style technology that tags individual game copies with information, such as if they have been played on another console or account. The system then checks these tags before starting the game and could potentially block titles that have been purchased second-hand

#29404Who is Sony to tell me what I can and can't do with a product I've already purchased.. because we know the reason that they are doing this is to stop companies like Gamestop getting all profit of used gamed sales.
Shit is getting very pathetic. If this goes through and they start making games only digital, I'm done with gaming altogether.

probably just getting the patent in there before someone else does
This is in no way a confirmation that this technology will be present in the next Playstation console

It's a patent. Companies file hundreds of thousands of patents a year to avoid their ideas getting stolen. Most never end up getting used.

I really don't see how they stand to gain anything from doing this.
It's not like Sony is the maker of "every game" out there, and would stand to profit from an increase in new game sales as a result of this patent.
If they do in fact tag the games, and they make it impossible to play a used/borrowed/stolen/left behind game....then they are only shooting themselves in the foot. I can't see the superior console (Xbox) wanting to buy the rights to this hard/software because, what fool wants to **** their consumer base in the ass?
Oh yeah, right....Sony does. Hence the decade old console, hence the sht services they provide for "free', and hence the games they proudly have marked for their console, that aren't even coded to play correctly on their console.
I tell ya, once everyone is due for a new console, we have to change over to the Xbox and see how COD is when it's made for the console it's being played on.

If this shit is true, I will most likely switch to PC. While I buy 70% of my games new, I buy some of them used. Like Dynasty Warriors 6 and Borderlands 1.

I realize that. Doesn't make it any less pathetic.. why would you even want a patent on such a stupid idea? It's all about greed.

the rumor is that companies will be going to a "steam-like" model, where there will be drops in prices of games as they age to encourage purchase
I really don't see this as a big deal, unless every game remains $60
I'm not paying full price for a three month old game

Can't let a friend borrow and play, can't play it if you get a new console. The only reason they're pursuing this is because they don't see any profits from used game sales.

we don't know if it won't be tied to an account, which would make sense
PC gaming is exactly like this, so I don't understand the problem
if they don't drastically drop the price of older games, no one will buy them....this will resolve itself pretty quickly
like Steam, if you can get games for REALLY cheap, this is not a big deal at all

From the article:
As far as the tech is concerned, it will embed an RFC tag onto the game discs that can detect the console it is first played in, and as such knows when it is put into a new console.
The way this reads, it only "detects the console it's first played in"....and then "knows" when it's put into a new console.
The article....if you look closely, is 1oz paranoia combined with 2oz of propaganda
It pictures a game store with a big X through it, and then, even in the face of their own statement "as far as the tech is concerned....", they proceed to hypothesize what far reaching effects and RFC tag might have.
As far as we know, it is a console detection system that can tell when it's in a different console. Beyond that, we can't ascertain what the purpose is....and we certainly can't trust the author of the article to give an unbiased assessment.
